Techniques for Taking Professional-Level Shots on iPhone

The Rule of Thirds is a compositional guideline. Shots are divided into nine equal parts by two horizontal and two vertical lines. Points where lines intersect are Focal points, for placing key elements, creating a balanced and visually engaging composition.

Go to Settings on your iPhone, then down to the Photos & Camera tab, and finally select the Grid.

Settings –> Photos & Camera –> Grid

When we shift our subject on one of the four dots, it often makes the photo more appealing than if the subject was centered.

Joker is the subject of the shot, but because he is not centered we can see the background making the shot much more balanced and exciting.

Focus is the sharpness of the subject in an image. It is achieved by adjusting the lens to make the subject appear clear and in focus while blurring the Background and/or the Foreground to create a sense of depth effect.

The grass in the Foreground of the shot pulls your attention away from the tree and brings depth.

The bright yellow flowers draw you to the picture but then you see that the lake is the highlight of the shot.

Exposure is the amount of light hitting the sensor. Adjusted by Aperture, Shutter speed, and ISO for image brightness and clarity.

Tap on your screen and swipe Up (higher exposure “brighter”) or Down (lower exposure “darker”)

Changing the exposure to highlight the background turned the subject into a silhouette

Angles are a way of altering viewpoints for varied perspectives. Changing angles changes the Composition, story, and visual appeal of the image.

The most common 3 angle types are highlighted in blue

The average go-to-camera angle.

The Low Angle creates a dramatic effect and gives the subject/subjects a feeling of power.

Also, a dramatic angle, a High Angle takes the power away from the subjects, making them more vulnerable.

Especially with digital cameras, you can always delete extra pictures which is better than missing the perfect shot.

Have fun!! The best way to be creative is to try new techniques. Also don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone and capture unique perspectives for a fresh and creative shot.
